I have been a member of Local 12 since 1990 but it wasn't until 2000 that
I became involved in union activities. Very soon afterwards I was selected
to the position of Associate Safety representative. In 2001 I became the Safety
Representative and later in the same year was elected by our membership to the position
of Treasurer. Currently, I am the Local 12 Business Manager and Treasurer
having been elected to that position for a third term.
My 'real' working career started with my enlistment in the US Navy
in 1974. Boot camp was in Orlando, Florida in 1975 during the "mild season"
February-May. After boot camp it was home to Olalla, Washington for a visit
then off to 'A' school in Memphis, Tennessee. After finishing 'A' school I
worked as an aviation electronics technician at NAS Alameda for several years.
While stationed there, I married a man I had met in boot camp. My tour of
duty in the US Navy ended in 1978 and I received an honorable discharge .
Life's ebb and flow resulted in two beautiful children, Jeanine and Steve, and a
divorce. It was trying to support my children all on my own that motivated
me to go back to school. I graduated from Oregon Institute of Technology in
1989 and gained employment at PSNS the same year. Currently, I am happily
married for 16 years to Kurt and live in Port Orchard. Between Kurt and I
we have 5 children, Shane, Sheila, Sherie, Jeanine and Steve, and 5 grandchildren,
Ricky, Keston, Kiara, Teyha, and JC (Jaiden Cole).
