A Letter from our IFPTE Local 12 President on COVID-19

Good day IFPTE Local 12!,

I would like to begin by saying “thank you!” to each and every one of you for everything that you do in support of our nation's defense. We understand that this has been, and will continue to be, an incredibly trying time, full of unprecedented stressors and uncertainty. We want you to know that your Union, in partnership with our Command leadership, is doing everything we can to ensure your safety and the safety of your families.

In the coming days, weeks, and months, our communities will be increasingly challenged by the growing spread of COVID-19.  We want you to know that you are not alone. Local 12 is fully focused on you as each of you puts forth your best efforts to support the continuation of operations at our Shipyard and Detachments during this pandemic. We know that working conditions are changing daily and we are taking every precaution as a Union to protect the health and safety of our members, as well as the public we serve, to include regular meetings with Command leadership and committee partnerships, e.g. telework.

In accordance with CDC best practices for decreased spread of the coronavirus and maximizing social distancing, Local 12 is suspending all General Membership meetings until further notice.  Starting Monday, March 23rd, the Union office is changing operations and we will no longer have walk-in services. Any in person visits will be by appointment only.  Please continue to contact us for all of your needs, we remain here for you.  Our contact information is listed below.

Telework:
The COVID-19 crisis is an extreme test of the necessity of many parts of our basic daily routines. With social distancing now an imperative, the transition to telework is poised to reshape the way we do our work both for the current crisis and beyond. The federal government has issued new guidance on supporting and utilizing telework, and this week the White House’s Office of Management and Budget urged agencies to “maximize telework flexibilities.”  We have worked hard alongside Command leadership to implement this as quickly as possible and as of yesterday we are making this a reality.  Except in Japan; due to Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) requirements, telework is not an option for our personnel working in Japan.
We know there are a number of questions and challenges to overcome but we are confident that we can get there together.  This is a long desired benefit, so we would like to remind everyone to ensure that you do everything required on your part so that as many of you as possible are able to take advantage of this opportunity. We thank those of you who are also doing your part to support this for others; your cooperation is appreciated and does not go unnoticed. Let’s work together to demonstrate to the Command that telework is a valuable tool that makes our work places stronger and more resilient.
