Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of IFPTE Local 12?
As an employee based organization at PSNS & IMF, our purpose is to meaningfully engage with Command and policy markers to address issues relevant to our careers, the shipyard, and the critical service we provide to tax payers.

Working together we have, and can continue to, with your support:
  • partner with Command to achieve success and resolve issues that impede organizational goals;
  • support fair and objective evaluations;
  • negotiate improvements over our work environment;
  • advocate training and professional development;
  • ensure no one has to compromise safety and their professional integrity over politics or favoritism;
  • develop a contract spelling out the rights and conditions of employment while ensuring flexibility and professional discretion to get the work done; and
  • advocate for or against legislation that currently or will impact our shipyard and our professions.
How can membership advance my career and improve PSNS & IMF?
Our goal is to continue to see PSNS & IMF as something positive for taxpayers and those in defense of our nation. It is in our interest to advocate for improvements and hold our leaders accountable to our agency’s mission, which in turn benefits you and our shipyard.

Those of us who carry out our shipyard’s mission on a daily basis need the autonomy to voice our ideas and concerns to managers without fear of reprisal. In joining Local 12, your voice and professional integrity are strengthened. As well, you gain the ability to take on issues beyond control of your immediate supervisor, when the situation warrants.
How does being a member benefit me?
Our ability to promote improvements and fairness, as well as collaborate with Command over changes that impact our work and lives, is influenced by our colleagues willing to join. The more who are willing to take on some personal responsibility over their career and work life by joining with their colleagues, the more influence we have as a group in the eyes of Command and policy makers. As such, the more employees involved, the more it benefits you, as with any professional association or democratically run organization.

 How can I join Local 12?
To join, simply fill out an SF-1187 (PSNS) or TRF-SF-1187 (TRF) and return to a representative of our organization. Alternatively, contact us and we will bring you a SF-1187 and pick up your form when completed.
Why have dues, and what are they used for?
As with any member driven organization, we need funds to carry out our goals, and our only source of funding is through membership dues. Dues are used, for example, to provide training, scholarship, insurance, office supplies, and legal support.
It should be noted that your dues do not go to politicians or political parties.
